FYI: buffet is from 11am to 2pm. I showed up at 2:07pm. Don't be like me!
Having said that, I was still pleasantly surprised. (I have no idea why folks are so down on this place)
The woman that took my word order was friendly and kind.
There was free chips n' salsa waiting for me at my table.
I got three carne asda tacos, with rice and beans on the side...for less than $12. That is pretty damn good for a Mexican place in Alaska, let alone a sit-down one. You'd pay about that much at a walk-through burrito joint.
The tacos were interesting but not in a bad way. Not in that way that Grandma says Indian food is "interesting" the first time you take her there, when she's trying to be polite and act like she's not just moving food around her plate.
They were interesting in that they were a hybrid between "street" tacos (sometimes called "tijuana tacos", or if you're from SoCal you probably call them: "tacos") and "gringo" tacos...y'know, how your whitey (am I still allowed to say this?) parents made them. They were minimalist in their ingredients like a street taco, they had double corn tortillas (you can get flour if you're a monster) like a street taco but...they had iceberg lettuce and chopped up tomatoes.
The point, though, is that they were good.
They came with a green sauce (probably tomatillo salsa) that was excellent.
I asked for some spicier red salsa, and I was promptly granted some.
Overall a good experience. The place was also pretty dead since it was post-buffet and everyone else in Anchorage was in a food coma, so I was able to quickly get back to work. -

The food was sub par considering the prices.
I got nachos drained in cheese - literally needed two tubs of chips to sop up the greasy cheese.
FYI - half order avocado is 11.50$ full order is 16$
Outlandishly pricey! Annnnnnd supppppper slow -

From a California Mexican woman this place is very mediocre. Service is great! But the food is so-so. Whatever you do DONT ORDER THE AL PASTOR. When I asked for al pastor her response was "what kind of meat"?? Uummm.. Al Pastor is normally pork. Decided to order it but was only able to eat 1 taco. Is was far from al pastor, it tasted like slow cooker pork.. On the plus side.. the service is great & Chile relleno is pretty good.

The mole literally made me tear up the first time I tried it. Tacos were okay--to be fair though, I think I ordered the ones with ground beef. I've seen people complain that this isn't authentic Mexican food, however it's not only owned by a Latinx family, but they are aware of their customer base which is probably 75% White hence the slight Americanization of some dishes. Prices are a bit steep, but I'd rather come here and support my local Latinxs than pay for overpriced food at Beartooth. Plus, the atmosphere is nice and typically quiet which makes for a cute date. And you just can't beat that mole. The flan is super pricy, but worth it with a loved one. Lastly, their margarita will make you feel goooooood..... (;

We were really excited about visiting Mexico in Alaska. We had it on our list of restaurants to visit for months, and had heard the mole was incredible. Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing. The service was lackluster, and when we asked if we could have a tiny sample of the mole to test the heat level, our waiter brought out a full size plate of mole over an enchilada and charged us full price. For what we ended up paying, the servings seemed a bit small, and we almost ordered the flan...until we saw that it's $11. Overall, the food was good, but we probably won't be dining in at Mexico in Alaska again.
